Crime Prevention Technology

Flock brand ALPR CameraAutomatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras are a valuable piece of Woodbury's crime prevention efforts. ALPR cameras are high-speed, computer-controlled camera systems that help police officers detect and deter crime in Woodbury.

The ALPR cameras utilized in Woodbury are specifically designed to only capture an image of the rear of the vehicle and rear license plate. The technology also recognizes the make and model of vehicles that pass the camera. These cameras do not have a live view nor do they capture images of drivers or passengers.

Police personnel are notified when the camera recognizes a passing vehicle as stolen or associated with felony warrants, amber alerts, silver alerts or KOPS (keeping our people safe) alerts. These cameras do not track or monitor traffic violations such as speeding or running a red light; nor do they track expired license plate tabs.

Woodbury currently has 12 ALPR cameras. These cameras are located around retail areas and are positioned in a way that allows for officer response and intervention.

Keeping our community safe

The notification from an ALPR camera provides our officers with valuable time to proactively plan and prepare for a possible apprehension. The extra planning time allows for strategic police work with the right techniques, tools and partners in place to respond in a way that improves the safety for officers and nearby bystanders.
