Recreational Fires

Recreational Fire in Outdoor FireplaceA permit is not required for recreational fires however, property owners are expected to follow the guidelines outlined below for their safety, the safety of others, and to help protect the environment. When having a recreational fire, please not only follow all of the guidelines provided on this page but also do everything possible not to produce an abundant amount of smoke which can become a nuisance to your neighbors especially when their windows are open.

Guidelines

  • Burning will be allowed between the hours of 8 am to midnight daily.
  • Only clean, dry, natural wood can be burned; treated or painted wood, plastic, rubber, leaves and grass are not allowed to be burned.
  • The fire shall not exceed 3 feet in diameter with a flame height of 2 feet maximum.
  • The fire shall take place on the owner's property and shall be a minimum of 5 feet from property lines.
  • The fire shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material.
  • Portable outdoor fireplaces shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material.
  • The fire shall not be conducted if the wind speed exceeds 10 miles per hour.
  • The use of flammable or combustible liquid accelerants is not permitted.
  • The fire must be constantly attended and supervised by an adult until the fire has been completely extinguished.
  • A connected garden hose or other means to extinguish the fire must be readily available.
  • Any person planning to have a recreational fire must be aware of local burning bans that have been issued by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. If a burning ban is in effect, all recreational fires are prohibited.
  • The fire must be extinguished is it becomes a nuisance to others or if not under adult supervision. (City Code Section 15-1, Subdivision1) The Woodbury Public Safety Department shall be responsible for enforcing the provisions of this section.

Recreational fires in multi-family residences are the responsibility of the property management or association. When applicable, residents must adhere to the property management/association rules/regulations and also these guidelines. These guidelines do not pertain to brush burning permits.
