Prescribed Burns

The city works with contractors to conduct prescribed burn activities at select sites to maintain and improve the quality of habitat and native vegetation in parks and in storm basin buffer areas. Prescribed burning is a cost-effective tool for maintenance of these native natural areas. This work typically takes place in April or May, during daylight hours as weather conditions allow.

Prescribed burns are conducted by trained natural resources professionals. Ecologists and prescribed burn crew members are experienced in the application of prescribed fire, and all necessary variances and permits are obtained from state and local agencies.

Efforts will be made to minimize the amount of smoke that may be close to ground level during burn events. For residents who are not home during daytime hours, please keep windows closed.
