With continued traffic volume growth on Pioneer Drive and Lake Road, the existing all-way stop intersection is beginning to show signs of degradation in both pavement condition and traffic capacity during peak times. In conjunction with the other planned roadway and trail improvements along Lake Road, the City of Woodbury is studying potential improvements for this intersection to improve traffic capacity and pedestrian safety.
Both Middleton Elementary and Lake Middle School are located in the southwest quadrant of the intersection and generate large amounts of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The city’s evaluation will include analyzing the morning school dismissal and evening peak hours to forecast year (2042) traffic volumes. The evaluations include assessing traffic volumes; intersection and roadway safety; pedestrian and bicycle safety; traffic operations; and other factors such as cost and right-of-way impacts.
At this time, there are two main options being analyzed for this intersection. The first option would be to convert this intersection into a signalized intersection and the other to construct a roundabout. An initial review indicates the existing all way stop would result in unacceptable delays and congestion in the design year of 2042. Both the signalized intersection and a roundabout may allow optimal performance into the future. The public’s feedback, related the existing intersection conditions and a proposed signal or roundabout, will be considered when forming the recommendations within the study.
