Youth Police Academy

Youth Police Academy Logo
The April 2020 Youth Police Academy was postponed due to precautions related to COVID-19.   If your child was registered for the academy, we will be contacting you when it has been rescheduled.

The Youth Police Academy is FREE and designed to educate middle school students in grades 6 through 8 about the police department and its day-to-day operations.  It's a fun and active introduction to the world of law enforcement.

The academy will include:
police squad
  • Station and building tours
  • Police scenarios
  • Patrol duties and operations
  • Criminal investigations and interview techniques
  • State Patrol helicopter, Trooper 7, visit (weather permitting)
  • Washington County SWAT demonstrations
  • K9 unit demonstration
  • Dinner provided each session
  • Transportation provided from Lake and Woodbury Middle Schools
Location and Transportation
Every Thursday transportation to the academy will be provided by Woodbury Public Safety staff from Lake and Woodbury Middle Schools. Week one will begin at Woodbury Public Safety, 2100 Radio Drive, and when the introductions and station tour is complete, academy participants will be taken to the HERO Center (10125 85th St S, Cottage Grove). All other classes will take place in entirety at the HERO Center. Every class will finish with students at the Woodbury Public Safety building for pick-up at 6 p.m. Dinner will be provided during each meeting at the Hero Center before leaving for pick-up.

Demonstrations and Simulations

Throughout the academy, officers will be using and demonstrating with simulated weapons. This can include a compressed air gun that does not shoot a projectile and plastic molded guns that do not have the capacity to shoot. If your child is not comfortable with this activity, participation when simulated weapons are used is not required and an alternative activity will be provided.

Participants will be coached on police building search techniques during one meeting. Plastic molded handguns and rifles will be present if participants would like to practice searching with a weapon in hand. Officers will also discuss firearms safety with participants, but live fire weapons will never be used during the academy.

Safety and fun is the number one priority for this academy. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable to participate.

Please do not hesitate to email any questions to Officer Rudy Wessels, rudy.wessels@woodburymn.gov.
