Elevated lawn watering restrictions due to DNR drought designations in effect

With more than 70 percent of Minnesota experiencing severe drought and many areas experiencing extreme drought, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is requiring local water suppliers to reduce water use in their communities.

That means Woodbury’s lawn-watering restrictions will temporarily change from an odd/even schedule to trash pickup day and one weekend day beginning Tuesday, July 27. This also applies to homeowners association irrigation systems.

New temporary lawn-watering restrictions in Woodbury:

  • If your trash pickup day is on Monday or Tuesday, you can only water your grass on your trash pickup day (Monday or Tuesday) and Saturday.
  • If your trash pickup day is on Wednesday or Thursday, you can only water on your trash pickup day (Wednesday or Thursday) and Sunday.
  • Homeowners associations must follow the same restrictions as residential properties –their assigned trash pickup day and one weekend day.
  • Commercial properties can only water grass on Fridays.

The regular noon to 5 p.m. time-of-day restriction will remain in effect.

Hand-watering plants and trees, washing vehicles, and children playing in sprinklers are permitted.

Failure to comply with the Woodbury watering policy is a violation of City Code. Violators may be issued an administrative citation.

Remember to reprogram irrigation controllers

If you have an irrigation controller, it should be reprogrammed to water on the new day(s) or use the manual setting to operate the system on the appropriate day. If you purchased a Rachio smart irrigation controller through the city, tips on running your system are available via the Rachio Help Center.

If you don’t have an irrigation controller, consider purchasing one at a discount offered to Woodbury residents. These controllers, certified by the Environmental Protection Agency to save at least 20% of your outdoor water use, work by connecting to your home Wi-Fi and are controlled by your smartphone. Typically retailing for $230, the city’s program allows you to purchase a Rachio Smart Irrigation Controller for only $35 and have it shipped directly to your home. Unlike some other smart controllers, Rachio controllers can be easily reprogrammed to custom schedules rather than every other day.
